THE TOPPER AND ITS FUNCTIONS

The topper is a thin padded mattress that is placed over the mattress to correct some structural defects and accentuate its comfort, a sort of additional layer.

It is placed precisely between the mattress and the mattress cover, and as mentioned, it is equipped with padding and is covered with breathable and high-quality fabrics.

It can have a thickness between 3 and 9 cm, but the most common is 5 cm.

Comfortable, light and easily transportable, it has, as we will see, a useful function, but it can also be used simply to embellish and give a personal touch to the bed system. Toppers are often equipped with practical elastic bands to be able to fix them firmly under the mattress.

What is the topper for?

There are several reasons why it might be useful to purchase a topper.

The topper is used to make the mattress more comfortable and soft even for just a short period of time, since it can be easily removed.

It therefore acts as a corrector when a mattress is considered too rigid or has become so over time. For example, if you have a spring mattress that no longer adequately cushions the weight of the person lying on it, the topper helps reduce pressure points.

Conversely, if the mattress is too soft and the body tends to sink into it, the mattress topper can help bring it back to the right level of firmness to increase its support capacity. You can also use it on two mattresses placed side by side: in this way you will avoid the unpleasant sensation of separation between the two, having instead the impression of sleeping on a single double mattress. On the contrary, on a double mattress you can also use a single topper, a useful solution when the two partners of the couple have different needs regarding the reception of the mattress.

It also has a protective function because in case of stains it preserves the mattress as it will be enough to wash and sanitize only the topper. It promotes transpiration, because excess humidity is expelled by the corrector and does not penetrate inside the mattress.

Types of toppers

Toppers can be made from many different materials, such as: • memory foam • latex • natural fibres • polyurethane foam.

Each type is suitable for a different type of needs. The memory topper is suitable for making a too rigid mattress more performing, while the fiber one is ideal for protecting the mattress, as it is light and easily washable.

The memory foam topper can be useful to make the mattress more comfortable even for people who suffer from back pain. The foam in fact takes the shape of the back making sleep more pleasant, and then returns to its original shape once the weight of the body is removed.

Memory foam is a hypoallergenic material, resistant to dust, mites and other allergens.

Is it more convenient to buy a topper or change mattress?

It is not easy to answer this question: both can be a valid solution, but each has its functions and is indicated in different situations.

The topper can be a fallback solution for those who cannot buy a new mattress or have recently bought one and it turned out to be a poor choice. Instead of putting away the new mattress, with a waste of money, you can find a way to fix it. One of the advantages of this product is in fact the economic savings that can be obtained by reducing the investment necessary for a new purchase, but at the same time achieving a better quality of sleep.
